Eclipse Vehicle Services Ltd: Robert and Anne Davison
When Robert Davison was offered the chance to go into business for himself after 23 years as a qualified mechanic, he knew it was an opportunity he simply couldn’t
And Robert and his wife Anne knew the best place to go for advice and guidance was enterpriseGY, Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s business support service, which is free to all residents of the borough.
Their exciting journey started last April when they accepted an offer from Robert’s then boss to take over the garage premises in Queen’s Road, Great Yarmouth, where Robert had been working for about six months.
“It was an opportunity that we couldn’t refuse,” said Robert, 40. “You’re only here once. We had thought about going into business before and when the whole package was offered up, we had to take it. We just needed help to get rolling.”
After visiting enterpriseGY to find out what was needed to set up in business, the Gorleston couple established Eclipse Vehicle Services Ltd, offering servicing and repairs on all makes and models of cars and light commercial vehicles.
The enterpriseGY business advisor gave them tailored help on various key aspects of running their new venture, including marketing and use of social media, financial administration and insurance.
Anne, 38, who left her former job as a catering assistant to lead on the paperwork for the business, said: “enterpriseGY gave us confidence to know that someone was there who could be contacted for support when we needed it.”
Robert added: “It helped us clear up a few things, clarify some uncertainties we had as to what we needed in place to trade. I would recommend it to others – anyone who’s starting out and isn’t sure what they need.”
A year on from setting-up, the business continues to grow thanks to their efforts, including self-promotion via Facebook. The couple, who have two school-age children, are now considering taking on an employee to help with the workload and can still get help from enterpriseGY.
