Awards Criteria

10th Anniversary special category – Business of the Decade

This award will be celebrate a true Great Yarmouth success story. Judges will look for businesses who can evidence a sustained commitment to Borough and a have become a role model in their own industry. Attributes such as resilience, growth and innovation will have been displayed throughout. The winning business will have exemplified Great Yarmouth’s ‘Spirit of Enterprise’ in recent years and will have had an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area for at least five years. It will have achieved market-leading status and be well–regarded by industry peers within and beyond the Borough.

Great Manufacturing / Engineering Business

This award will celebrate manufacturing/engineering businesses that can demonstrate excellent working practices that have had a significant impact on the company either through turnover, sales, efficiency or productivity.

This award is open to all sizes of businesses who conduct manufacturing and/or engineering from an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area.

Judges will look for businesses who can evidence as many of the following: Improved financial performance (for example turnover, sales, profit), Improved efficiency or productivity, Quality of manufacturing/ engineering, Engagement with and encouragement of staff and use of latest research including collaborations with universities or higher education institutes?

Great Investment in People

This award will celebrate businesses that can demonstrate significant passion, commitment and/ or investment in people. This may include training schemes, personal development, mentoring- or post-graduate schemes.

This award is open to all sizes of businesses working from an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area.

Great New Business

This award will celebrate new and up-and-coming businesses that can demonstrate how they have turned an idea into a viable, sustainable business.

This award is open to companies that began trading on or after 01 April 2012 from an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area.

Judges will look for businesses who can evidence as many of the following: Reason for initial business idea and market analysis, Growth including turnover, profit, customer base, employees and investment in premises/ equipment/machinery, Approach (especially if innovative) to product/service development, Approach to developing customer base (including promotion and marketing strategies and market penetration), Potential for sustained growth and Effective leadership and vision.

Great Business Idea

This award will celebrate businesses that can demonstrate that a new idea adopted in their business has had an impact on either on an industry issue, turnover, sales, efficiency or productivity. This may include innovative products or services, environmental or energy savings, IT or automation or the use of an application in a different market.

This award is open to all sizes of businesses adopting a Great New Business Idea from an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area.

Judges will look for businesses who can evidence as many of the following: How the idea or application has solved company specific or industry issue, How the idea has been developed and applied to improve financial performance or operational effectiveness, How the idea has created competitive advantage or led to an increase in market share, How the workforce has been involved in or encouraged in generating new business ideas and the impact (if applicable) on efficiency or sustainable energy practices.

Great Customer Service

This award will celebrate businesses that can demonstrate providing an exceptionally high standard of customer service or “beyond the norm”. Applicants may demonstrate that new working practices have been implemented after an area of weakness had been identified or that they have consistently provided excellent service.

This award is open to all sizes of businesses providing great customer service from an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area.

Judges will look for businesses who can evidence as many of the following: A clear focus on their customers’ needs i.e. innovative customer-driven initiatives designed to raise standards of service, Increased customer satisfaction or a constant strive to exceed customer expectations, How customer service has improved financial performance, growth or market share, How the business effectively deals with complaints, How their staff are engaged and motivated with customer service.

Great Community Contribution

This award will celebrate businesses that can demonstrate engagement with or contribution to the wider Great Yarmouth community, for example supporting local groups or projects.

This award is open to all sizes of businesses with an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area supporting the community in this area.

Judges will look for businesses who can evidence as many of the following for their community initiative that: Are sustainable, Are relative to the size of business or organisation, Have had a measurable impact on the Great Yarmouth community, especially in areas of disadvantage, Have brought long-term sustainable benefits to the Great Yarmouth community, Have achieved impact for the business.

Great International Growth

This award will celebrate businesses that can demonstrate that finding and developing new growth opportunities abroad has improved their financial performance.

This award includes all aspects of international growth including export, geographical expansion and acquisition.

This award is open to all sizes of businesses with an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area achieving export growth or an increase in revenue from overseas operations since April 2010.

Judges will look for businesses who can evidence as many of the following: Their steps taken to achieve international growth including research into market and demand, Export growth or increase in revenues from overseas operations and contribution to business as a whole, Increase in market share, Potential and plan for sustained growth, Overall commitment to international business.

Great Family Owned Business Award

The award will celebrate family businesses that can demonstrate excellent working practices that have had a significant impact on the company’s turnover, sales, efficiency or productivity.

The award is open to all family businesses in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area. To be eligible businesses do not have to be wholly owned by one family but an element of family ownership is required. First generation family businesses are also eligible.

Judges will look for businesses that can evidence as many as of the following successful business traits: Improved financial performance (sales, turnover, profit); Improved efficiency, productivity or quality; Significant staff engagement and development; Great customer service; Clear vision for the future.

In addition judges will be interested to hear of the particular challenges faced within the business and the contribution made to the local community it operates in.

Great Business Growth

This award will celebrate businesses that can demonstrate sustained significant growth through turnover, sales or employment.

This award is open to all sizes of businesses with an operating base in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council administrative area who can demonstrate growth since April 2010.

Judges will look for businesses who can evidence growth in terms of as many of the following: Financial performance (turnover, sales and profit), Customer base and market share, Employees and other investment in staff such as training, apprenticeships etc, Premises or investment in plant & machinery, Judges will also look for Sustainability of growth.

2017 Business of the Year

This category will be the ‘winner of winners’ chosen from the nine category winners excluding Business of the Decade. Judges will look for the business that has shown excellent working practices, sustainability and success over and above the competition.
